The collection entitled ‘Mixed Messages’ takes inspiration from clerical vestments and ecclesiastical decoration seen on a recent trip to Rome. The oppulent adornments suggest a power used for good, but I question the mixed messages given from how the Catholic church is portrayed and how its actions are viewed. I am dyslexic and I believe I can interpret a mixed message from less ambiguous communication. This collection draws a connection between mixed messages from dyslexia and also the mixed messages communicated between the look and the actions of the Catholic church. Quality weight cotton fabrics are used within the collection to create strong shapes and a clean cut aesthetic which enhance the natural curves of the body, whilst metallic prints offer a distinctive and eccentric look. Some of the fabrics used in the collection are upcycled curtain linings, however all fabrics work for longevity and designed for minimal environmental impact. ‘Mixed Messages’ the collection is designed to appeal to a subculture who appreciate the elegance of clean sharp gothic style with the purity of light colours. Inspired by the religious concept where white and light colours symbolise purity and innocence, it presents a mixed message when worn to accentuates the curves of the body.
